Aerial Spraying in Reno County

Scheduled To Reduce Mosquito Numbers for 7/18/2019

Date: 7/15/2019

Vector Disease Control International, Reno County, and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment have scheduled an aerial spray operation for approximately 53,000 acres in and around municipalities in Reno County to help reduce the number of mosquitoes resulting from the flooding caused by heavy rains over the past several months. The aerial application will begin 7/18/19 10:00 PM till 2:00 AM, weather permitting. If weather does not permit the application to occur, the application will be made on the night of (unknow at this time).  Dibrom® is the pesticide being applied at the rate of 0.75 fluid ounce per acre.

Dibrom is one of the principal OP insecticides used for adult mosquito control in the United States. It is effective against almost all species of major nuisance and vector mosquito species in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world. Dibrom has the advantages of being fast acting, dissipating quickly and it degrades very rapidly in the environment. Dibrom has been described by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) as one of the principal pesticides used for adult mosquito control in the U.S. The Agency concludes that the current use of Dibrom (naled) in controlling mosquitoes has a significant health benefit by reducing annoyance and potential disease-carrying mosquitoes.  Dibrom is labeled for use in residential areas, municipalities, tidal marshes, swamps, woodlands, agricultural areas, livestock pastures, feed lots and pastures including dairy cattle.

The aerial spray operation is being conducted in response to surveillance findings that indicate increased mosquito populations. Aerial spraying is necessary to combat and control mosquitoes where ground spraying is less accessible and effective. The proposed plan is to spray approximately 53,000 acres by air, weather permitting.

Vector Disease Control International (VDCI), a mosquito control company operating out of Greenville, MS will be conducting the aerial spray operation. VDCI has extensive experience in conducting aerial applications for mosquito control having aerially treated over 3 million acres to control mosquitoes resulting from the floodwaters left behind by the Hurricane Harvey. VDCI is also the state aerial applicator for the Pennsylvania DEP.

VDCI will be using a twin-engine aircraft flying at an altitude of approximately 300 feet to conduct the aerial application. The aircraft is equipped with an aerial spray guidance system specifically engineered for mosquito control operations. The plane is able to receive in real-time, meteorological conditions such as temperature, wind speed and wind direction.  This onboard equipment allows us to optimize the application within the intended treatment area, while minimizing drift outside the target zone.

For additional information contact VDCI’s Regional Director, Ted Green at 419-722-2607.
